Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark gallus) was born in Florida, Missouri on November 30, in 1835. He was the sixth child of John Marshall and Jane Lampton Clemons. The family soon locomote to Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain was raised. After his fathers death in 1847, Twain was bound(p) to a printer, writing for the Hannibal Journal. Later Twain loped as a licensed Mississippi river-boat pilot (1857-61) where he got his famous penname Twain. It came from the forestall Mark twain! which meant that the water was at least 12 feet cryptic which was deep enough for most boats to pass. In 1861 Twain served shortly as a confederate irregular. The Civil War had vagabond an end to the steamboat traffic so Twain was out of travel and tried to start a career in sumptuous mining.

In 1864 Twain left wing for California, where worked in San Francisco as a reporter.
