For all the years, time, and dollars we pour into our educational system as students, taxpayers, and last pargonnts, we can expect a strong return on our investment. But I piddle been struck, recently, as I relieve oneself been pursuing serious classical scholarship, by the undeniable verity that this return is far less than it should be. If the goal of an education is to prolong the minds of citizens and to enable them to read, react, and respond to the world unfolding around them, our educational system is a flat failure.
Ive been struck in particular by the near-universal lack of knowledge as to governmental systems and styles of government. This is important non only for the esoteric study of account statement but for our ability to understand developments in international political relation in the present, and to shape decisions, especially as regards who we vote for, in domestic politics. What good does it do to characterize Libya, Egypt, and North Korea as totalitarian regimes, throwing about the term totalitarian with no collect regard for its actual meaning? If anything, this puts our state, country, and society in a precarious position at best.
Good thinking has continuously started with be terms; even in this short endeavor I have already gone about defining the term education.
