Life for African Americans in the beginning decades of the 20th carbon was a time of highs and lows, often fil direct with great strife and confusion. The ending of the Civil War in 1865 ushered in a period of Reconstruction that involved a complex and promptly changing series of federal official and state policies. From Reconstruction came threesome amendments to the United States Constitution: the 13th, which abolished slavery; the 14th, which extended federal legal protections equally to citizens regardless of race; and the 15th, which abolished racial restrictions on balloting. With this federal backing, former slaves were able to strengthen their social standing by voting, opening and attending schools, and striving for civic participation (holding customary office). Because of these advancements, things seemed to be looking up for African Americans; however, dissension among pureness supremacists was clandestinely brewing in the Confederate South. By the end of the nineteenth Century, white supremacy paramilitary organizations (organizations similar to professional militaries without the analogous status or prestige) such as the Ku Klux Klan were using such forceful scare tactics (e.g. violence, intimidation, assassinations) to keep blacks out of the voting booths that racist white Democrats were able to regain political control.
